Investment Trust Scrutineer

Subscription now reduced!

Investment Trust Scrutineer was launched in June 2005 and is aimed at the trust enthusiast whether private or professional. The idea of the newsletter is to stimulate some real debate for a change (as opposed to the sanitised stuff put out in articles designed not to offend investment managers with large advertising budgets). To that end, John has persuaded a number of sector professionals to pen guest articles, most of which are unique to Scrutineer. In Issue No. 5, for example, there is a specially written piece by Ewen Macpherson, ex-CEO of 3i, the private equity giant.

For the private investors, there are typically 6-8 recommendations per issue, each centred round a particular theme, such as 'investment trusts for income seekers'. There is also a widely-read Letters Page, Analysts' Corner, a historical feature and a Trust Fanatics' Area covering selected industry news. The third theme of Scrutineer, so sadly lacking in much industry research, is the historical dimension. Few things are new in the financial sector and it can be instructive to see where it all went wrong (or went very well for that matter) in the sector's past.

A new newsletter is published every 6-9 weeks.

Truly independent opinion

Investment Trust Scrutineer is not a retail 'news stand' type of publication. It is produced and edited by industry professionals within an FSA-authorised and regulated framework. There are three key parties involved - Newlands Fund Research, Prudent Wealth Management and Craigcrook Management Services, each organisation providing its own layer of checks and controls.* This means that the newsletter can include investment ideas and recommendations, backed by truly independent opinion, while subscribers can draw comfort from the careful consideration underpinning its content.

In short, Investment Trust Scrutineer is a completely independent source of information and opinion on the UK trust market. As such it is aimed at the discerning investor, whether private or institutional.

The first level, IPI, is suitable for individual investors who are subscribing to the newsletter for their own personal interest and potential benefit. (Smaller financial institutions, such as local legal, accountancy, or IFA firms, are eligible to subscribe at this level). Scrutineer is a copyrighted publication and this 'single user' subscription does not confer the right to copy or distribute the newsletter to third parties.

The second level, IMU, is suitable for larger financial institutions and national IFA firms. In this instance, although Scrutineer remains a copyrighted publication, a multi-user subscription will confer the right to copy or distribute the newsletter, without amendment and subject to certain terms and conditions, to the subscriber's investor clients as well as to its own employees. (It should still not be copied to other firms or private individuals).
